STCW 95 Personal Survival Techniques
Course Outline
Red Ensign’s Personal Survival Training is delivered in a practical and realistic manner with the opportunity to jump into cold water and work with others to learn survival techniques. You’ll test yourself in fully controlled, but more difficult conditions than those usually experienced in an indoor swimming pool. We will provide dry-suits and thermal clothing.
Content & Objectives
The purpose of this training is to give everyone intending to work at sea the basic, essential knowledge and experience of personal survival principles and techniques that can be applied to maximise chances of survival in the event of a maritime casualty.
You will gain a knowledge and understanding of surviving conditions at sea in the event of ship abandonment
The course will include

Types of emergency situations such as collision, fire, sinking

Types of life-saving appliances normally carried on ships

Equipment in survival craft

Location of personal life-saving appliances

Principles concerning survival
Your practical instruction will include
-
Donning a life jacket
-
Donning and use an immersion suit
-
Safely jump from a height into the water
-
Right an inverted life raft while wearing a life jacket

Swim while wearing a life jacket
-
Keeping afloat
-
Board a liferaft from ship and water while wearing a life jacket
-
Take initial actions on boarding a liferaft to enhance chance of survival
-
Stream a drogue or sea anchor
-
Operate location devices, including radio equipment
Learning Mode
Both practical and theoretical instruction is delivered at the Red Ensign training facility in Cowes.
Entry Requirements
Other than the required minimum age of 18, there are no pre-requisites for this course.
