STCW 95 Fast Rescue Craft Training

Course Outline

This training is intended for seafarers who are required to take charge of a fast rescue boat (FRB) in emergency situations during and after launch, in accordance with:

• SOLAS regulations
• STCW convention and code
• The Merchant Shipping (Life Saving Appliances) Regulations 1986
• The Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 1997

On successful completion of the training and assessment, the trainees will have knowledge of the construction and function of different types of fast rescue boats and associated equipment and be able to:

• Take charge of FRB's during and after launch and upon recovery
• Participation in all aspects of rescue and care of casualties from the water
• Operate FRB engines
• FRB capsize; causes, prevention and righting
• FRB craft; equipment and operation
• FRB maintenance, operations and casualties

 

Content & Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

• Take charge of a fast rescue boat (FRB) during and after launch
• Understand the construction and outfit of FRBs and individual items of their equipment
• Know the particular characteristics and facilities of FRBs
• Understand safety precautions during launch and recovery of an FRB
• Know the procedures for righting a capsized FRB
• BE able to handle an FRB in prevailing and adverse weather and sea conditions
• Understand navigational and safety equipement available in an FRB
• Search patterns and environmental factors affecting their execution
• Assessment of the readiness of FRBs and related equipment for immediate use
• Knowledge of the maintenance, emergency repair, normal inflation and deflation of buoyancy compartment of inflated FRBs
• Operate an FRB engine, including methods of starting and opertaing an FRB engine and its accessories.

Learning Mode

The course comprises of hands-on practical use of FRBs and participation in physically demanding in-water scenarios in and around the Solent waters.The candidate's competence is assessed through their active participation during the practical sessions. Theory sessions are taught in the classroom.

Candidates must also take a final written examination which has a required 80% pass mark.  A course debrief is conducted at the conclusion of every course.

Entry Requirements

In order to gain an IMO Certificate of Proficiency, a programme of training approved by the MCA and meeting the requirements laid down in STCW 95 Regulation VI/2, para.2 and STCW Code Table A-VI2-2;

Delegates should bring with them evidence that they hold the following:

1) Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft (OPITO or TEMPSC are not acceptable)
Or  UK Approved Lifeboat man Certificate or other National Equivalent
2) Certificate to Medical Standards Section B-VI/2/1 (ENGI) or other National Equivalent to Merchant Navy standards.
3) Identification is required either through Discharge Book Number or other National Identification
