Ships Security Officer Package (incl. Global Piracy Awareness, VHF & Radar)

 Course outline

 The Ship’s Security Officer (SSO) and STCW95 Basic Safety Training week are usually the minimum requirements for an anti-piracy maritime security position though, in our experience,  each employer has their own requirements and it is always a good idea to check these before booking a course!
The objective of the Ship’s Security Officer Package is to provide the practical skills and knowledge to undertake the duties of a Ship Security Officer using a combination of classroom presentations and challenging scenarios.  In addition to the prescribed SSO course, this package also includes a RADAR and VHF course and throughout the week there will be an emphasis on global piracy awareness, providing both a general understanding of the current piracy situation and an assessment of non-lethal measures used to help prevent an attack on board your ship.

Programme Breakdown

 

Ship’s Security Officer Course, covering the following topics:

• ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) Code
• Co-ordination and implementation of a ship security plan
• Maintain and supervise operation of ship security plan
• Monitoring of the ship's security environment and any necessary modifications, updates or reviews of the Ship Security plan elements
• Regular security inspections of ships to ensure appropriate security measures are maintained
• Co-ordination of all the security aspects involved on-board passenger or cargo carrying vessels
• An interactive and hands-on combination of our Red Ensign Global Piracy Awareness, RYA VHF Radio and RYA Radar course.
   

What you will gain on successful completion of the course:

 STCW 95 Ship’s Security Officer Certificate (if you have 12 months sea time, otherwise please read the special note below)
RYA Radar Certificate
RYA VHF DSC Short Range Radio Certificate + Licence
Red Ensign Global Piracy Awareness Certificate

There are a number of other courses such as Powerboat Training or Basic Navigation which would offer additional skills and certification which will be useful once you board your vessel, more details can be found here.

Special Regulations for MARSEC (Maritime Security) personnel 
 

In accordance with MCA regulations released to the training colleges on 16th September 2011, a STCW certificate of Proficiency in Designated Security Duties will be issued on course completion if you do not have the required sea time of 12 months.
