Competent Crew
Course Outline
The competent crew course introduces the complete beginner to cruising and teaches personal safety, seasmanship and helmsmanship to the level required to be a useful member of the crew of a cruising yacht.
A competent crew course takes place either over five days, or three weekends, on board a yacht, during which you will sail no less than 100 miles in and around the waters of The Solent, based at our headquarters in Cowes
Content & Objectives
The course covers the following:
- Knowledge of sea terms and part of a boat, her rigging and sails
- Sail handling
- Ropework
- Fire precautions and fire fighting
- Personal safety equipment
- Man overboard drills
- Emergency equipment
- Manners and customs
- Rules of the Road
- Tenders and dinghies
- Weather forecasting
- Illness particularly seasickness
- Helmsmanship and sailing
- Helping to keep the boat run smoothly
Learning Mode
The course is taught over five days on board one of our yachts.
Entry Requirements
There are no requirements for participants other than an ability to swim.
