Entry into Enclosed Spaces (MCA approved)
Course Outline
This MCA approved course aims to provide the necessary knowledge and information to those designated to enter into and carry out work in confined spaces.
On completion of this course candidates will have sufficient knowledge and understanding to enable them to:-
o Recognise potentially dangerous enclosed spaces aboard a vessel
o Complete a typical enclosed space entry “Permit to Work”
o Perform safe testing of an atmosphere prior to enclosed space entry using typical industry test equipment, including knowledge of its maintenance & testing calibration requirements
o Complete a safe enclosed space entry
o Carry out a self-rescue from an enclosed space
o Perform the role of Safety Attendant
Content & Objectives
Meeting the training requirements set out in The Merchant Shipping Regulations, the IMO Resolution “Recommendations for entering enclosed spaces aboard ships” and the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seaman the training would include, but not be confined to: -
o Risk Assessment / Identification of potential hazards
o Safety Inspections
o Permit-Required Confined Space / Completion of permit
o Practice of safe entry, working and exit procedures of confined spaces
o Use of industrial atmosphere testing equipment
o Practice of entry supervision
o Simulated self-rescue incl. breathing apparatus
Learning Mode
This one day course comprises practical scenarios and underpinning theory and is held at our specifically converted enclosed-space-training-unit at Red Ensign in Cowes.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must be 18 years of age and have a reasonable level of fitness as the course involves practical exercises.
