Course Outline
A five day course designed to give students both theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on experience of diesel engines.
The course meets the requirements of the MCA Codes of Practice for the Safety of Large Commercial Sailing and Motor Vessels, the Safety of Small commercial Motor Vessels and the Safety of Small workboats and Pilot boats.
Participants will not be qualified as diesel engineers, rather it will enable students to carry out regular servicing of marine diesel engines, and to carry out fault detection and prevention.
Content & Objectives
To provide training in the following areas:
- The Compression Ignition Engine
- Cycle of Operation and Constructional Details
- The Fuel System
- The role of air in the combustion process
- The cooling system
- The lubrication system
- Power transmission
- Hull fittings
- Fault finding and rectification
Learning Mode
The course will be taught at the Red Ensign training facility in Cowes. It will be run as a combination of theory and practical hands-on sessions, working with our four, varied diesel engines.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must have some experience of working with diesel engines, over and above the level of RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance. Experience of working with diesels on board ship would be appropriate.
Candidates must be over 18 years of age.
