Start Yachting

COURSE NUMBER RYA SY


This course provides a short introduction to sail cruising for novices. By the end of the course, participants will have experienced many aspects of working and living on board a yacht, including steering, sail handling, berthing and ropework. Safety aspects will be paramount and participants will be aware of safety requirements on board.

Start Yachting is the RYA's entry level course, and holders of a Start Yachting certificate can obtain a Competent Crew certificate by completing a further three days or two weekends of the Competent Crew course.

To cover the following topics:

  • Basic knowledge of the yacht, rigging, parts of a boat, and terms associated
  • Ropework - securing a yacht to a cleat, use of winches, and tieing the following knots: figure of eight, bowline, round turn and two half hitches.
  • Experience of sailing under all points of sail
  • Steering a yacht under power
  • Rules of the road
  • Weather forecasts
  • Taking part in man overboard procedures
  • Safety equipment and clothing
  • Hazards and actions in an emergency

The course takes place on board our yachts in the waters of the Solent, from our headquarters in Cowes. It takes the form of active participation and tuition at sea.

There are no requirements other than an ability to swim.
