ISAF - Offshore Personal Survival Training

COURSE NUMBER


The objective of this course is to certify successful candidates in accordance with ISAF Special Regulation 6.01. It is a stand alone course module and a prerequisite for participation in the Fastnet Race Campaign. This ISAF course is also recognized for any RORC race events.

The required sections of this course are as follows:

  • Care and maintenance of safety and other equipment
  • Storm sails
  • Damage control and repair
  • Heavy weather - crew routines, boat handling and drogues
  • Man overboard prevention and recovery
  • Giving assistance to other craft
  • Hypothermia
  • Search and Rescue organisation and methods
  • Weather forecasting
  • Liferafts and lifejackets (both theory and practical sessions)
  • Sea survival exam
  • Fire precaustions and fire fighting (theory and practical sessions)
  • CPR and first aid
  • Communication equipment
  • Pyrotechnics and EPIRBs

The course is conducted on the basis of an intensive two day combined theory and practical session. Theory sessions are taugh tin teh dedicated Red Ensign Classroom. The course also comprises practical use sessions in Sea Survival in an indoor pool.

There are no formal educational requirements to undertake this course and no assummed knowledge level pre-requisites.
