A five day course

The course is delivered through a mixed mode. Theory sessions are taught in the dedicated Red Ensign Sea Survival classrooms. The course also comprises a supervised compulsory pool based liferaft launch, inversion and entry as well as individual and group based swimming activities. First Aid utilizes modern equipped resuscitation 'Annies'. PSSR is based upon group discussion and experiential scenarios. Fire fighting utilizes real smoke, breathing apparatus along with fire hoses and extinguishers in purpose firefighting training facility. Candidate's competence is assessed through their active participation during the practical session.

This is a stand alone course module but is a requirement for employment aboard commercially operated vessels. However candidates can complete other modules/subjects at Red Ensign maritime training in Yachtmaster, STCW95 or Master 200/Officer Of the Watch 500.

There are no formal educational requirements to undertake this course, although all participants must be over 16 years of age.

For a commercial certificate of competence, all commercial seafarers are required to hold a valid medical certificate. These are valid for a maximum of 2 years. The most rigorous part of the medical is that of eyesight, and the MCA strongly recommends that those intending to work in the merchant navy or in a maritime career takes their medical before embarking on a long period of training.

For more information about the medical requirements, and to find an MCA qualified medic, please see M notice MSN 1765 (M) on their website (www.mcga.gov.uk)
