The aim of this course is to increase the awareness of vessel stability and improve vessel safety standards. Developed by The Sea Fish Industry Authority for the industry that is regarded as the most dangerous occupation in the country, it is targeted at anyone who works on commercial vessels where stability is an issue.

The intermediate course is targeted in particular at hthose who have overall responsibility for vessel stability, generally the skipper. It is seen as essential for those working a vessel under 15m who do not need currently to hold a certificate of competence.

The course covers the following subjects:

  • Floatation
  • Basic stability terms
  • Equilibrium
  • Effect of the movement of weights on stability
  • Gear, landing catch or working with equipment over the side
  • Free surface effect
  • Weathertight and watertight integrity
  • Behaviour of a vessel in a seaway
  • General stability guidance
  • Assessment

The course is delivered in a mixed mode, using models and discussions around the topic as well as illustrations relating back to the fishing vessels.
