STCW 95 Ship Safety Officer

The objectives of this course is that on completion of this course candidates will have sufficient knowledge and understanding to enable them to:-

  • Carry out the role of ships safety officer
  • Carry out risk assessment and accident reporting
  • Carry out safety audits and inspections
  • Create a safety culture aboard ship through teamwork.

To explore the role of a Shipboard Safety Officer:

Legislative Background – to include such topics as :-

  • International Health and Safety Legislation
  • Duties of Employer
  • Duties of Safety Officer
  • Powers of safety representatives

Safety Management on Board ship:-.

  • ISM Code Safety Management System – procedures
  • Accident Reduction
  • Hazard Identification
  • Creating a Safety Culture.

Practical workshops would include but not confined to:-

  • Risk Assessment
  • Safety Inspections
  • Creating a safety culture through teamwork.

This course is conducted over a three day period of theory and practical training.

This course is delivered through a mixed mode. Theory sessions are taught in the dedicated Red Ensign training rooms. The course also comprises practical scenarios, and underpinning theory .

 

 

Candidates will have served at sea in a merchant vessel for a minimum of two years prior to attaining the age of 18. In the case of a safety officer on board a tanker, this shall include at least six month service in such a ship.
