COURSE NUMBER STCW 95
This course is the second of four courses recommended for those on board commercial vessels. This course, Proficiency in Medical First Aid at Sea has an emphasis on the provision of medical first aid on-board ship.
The course aims to develop The Competence required is to be able to apply immediate first aid in the event of an accident or illness on board.
Assessment criteria for evaluation of competencies are:
The identification of probable cause, nature and extent of injuries is prompt, complete and conforms to current first-aid practice
Risk of harm to self and others is minimised at all times
Treatment of injuries and the patient's condition is appropriate, conforms to recognised first-aid practice and international guidelines
The course is taught over four days at our specially equipped training centre at our headquarters in Cowes, Isle of Wight.
Candidates must be at least 16 years of age and for a certificate under the terms of the STCW Convention must have served at sea in a merchant vessel for at least 6 months.
There are no pre-requisites in terms of prior training. Candidates who hold a certificate in Elementary First Aid issued in accordance with Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code (or an equivalent recognised by the MCA) must undertake this training in full in order to update and extend their knowledge and skills in current medical first aid procedures.
While not yet the advanced module this module is nevertheless a substantial step up from the compulsory STCW95 for all seafarers.
